Chinwag Live Lifts the Lid on Web 2.0

December 19, 2006 - Press Dispensary - When Web 2.0 collides with Bubble 2.0 is the result real, sustainable business or faddish pipe dreams? These and other key issues for digital media will be addressed in the upcoming events series from Chinwag (http://www.chinwag.com), renowned online community for the UK's new media industry.

Kick-starting the event series, 'Chinwag Live: Wobble 2.0' on Tuesday 6 February asks global movers and shapers on the UK web scene to shed light on their business models and discuss the technologies driving their output.

The four speakers at Chinwag’s inaugural event represent the cream of UK talent. Dave Nicholson is inventor and co-founder of Zopa, which is pioneering a peer-to-peer lending and borrowing system, recently featured on Newsnight. Matteo Berlucchi is CEO of Skinkers, a company fashioning direct-to-device delivery channels for the BBC and Salesforce.com, amongst others. Ryan Carson is co-director of Carson Systems, a multi-strand business combining software applications, training and events that recently launched a US version of its highly-respected UK conference, 'Future Of Web Apps'. Mike Butcher has worked as a new media sector journalist and editor since 1994 and has written for publications worldwide, including the Financial Times and The Guardian.

As entrepreneurial start-ups are once again hitting the spotlight, 'Chinwag Live: Wobble 2.0' is taking a lead in setting the scene for discussion of the big issues arising from the current upsurge of innovation and investment in digital media.

Should start-ups be built to flip or built to last? Is the industry fashioning the digital future or jockeying for short-term gains? Is the stress on VC and angel funding blinding the industry to the opportunities and plus points of bootstrapping? How else to develop an idea? How is talent being supported and incubated? And what are portals, broadcasters and telcos bringing to the equation?

The launch of the Chinwag Live evening events series – where not just the speakers’ but everybody’s input counts – is a natural next step, according to Chinwag's MD and founder, Sam Michel. He says: “Although London is buzzing with industry events, there's still a shortage of those that really lift the lid and cast an enquiring eye on the latest trends in web and mobile in the full spirit of community participation and peer review. This is what the Chinwag e-mail lists have done for the last seven years. Now we’re providing the new media community with another place to meet up and share expertise.”

In tandem with the monthly events series, Chinwag is re-launching its main website in the New Year – building on the success of its sister site, Chinwag Jobs, which has gone from strength to strength since its launch in January 2006 through word-of-mouth marketing alone.

The Chinwag team is also expanding, with Deirdre Molloy moving from NMK to become editor and handle events development, and Hugh Evans coming from Ipoints.co.uk to join the sales division.

Speaking of the events programme and revamped website in the pipeline, Molloy said: “Chinwag Live is an integral part of our broader mission to cast light on new trends right across the industry and be a connecting force for ideas and talent.”

Future events in the Chinwag Live series will include ‘Mobile Metamorphosis’, ‘Misadventures in Advertising’ and ‘Delivery Deathmatch: Email vs RSS’. The series will include podcasts of each event.
