Mudpuppy Lifts the Lid on BPA Health ScareSeptember 17, 2008 - Press Dispensary - A major study published online yesterday (September 16) in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that the hormone-like chemical bisphenol A (BPA) may cause human heart disease and diabetes at significant levels. BPA is used in a wide range of plastic food and drink containers, most notably bottled water and fizzy drink bottles, sports bottles and children’s snack bottles. And The Mudpuppy, from One Green Bottle Ltd (http://www.onegreenbottle.com ), is one of the UK’s few safe alternatives to these hazardous containers.Every day, parents send their kids to school with BPA-based drinks bottles, unaware of the danger they’re exposing these young people to, and then head off with their own sports bottles to the office, gym or the great outdoors. And all the while, BPA is ‘leaching’ from the bottles into their drinks where – as the study shows - it appears to act as a potentially fatal toxin in their systems. BPA has been creating health concerns since the 1930s and the new study puts these worries on a truly scientific footing. The study scientists analyzed urinary BPA concentrations from 1,455 U.S. adults aged 18 to 74 and found that, with detectable levels of BPA in more than 90% of the population, those with the highest levels of BPA were three times more likely to have heart disease and more than twice as likely to have diabetes. Dr David Melzer, who led the study, said: "These findings add to the evidence suggesting adverse effects of low-dose BPA in animals … there's now a scientific question mark over the safety of bisphenol A in humans.” Ana Soto of Tufts University said the study raised enough concerns to warrant (US) government action to limit BPA exposure. Traditionally, the main alternative to re-usable plastic drinking bottles in the UK has been aluminium bottles. But these too have their hazards. Aluminium has long been associated with Alzheimers, and because there are strict regulations about aluminium contact with food and drink, they’re lined … often with BPA-based plastic. The Mudpuppy, on the other hand, is made from stainless steel #304, which is food hygiene approved and is widely adopted by the food and drinks industries for its sanitary, non toxic properties. Available in sizes from the infant 350ml to the big daddy 1000ml, and with a range of carrying accessories, it’s ideal for anyone who needs a gulp on the go but worries about the effects of plastic on their health. Named after an aquatic creature that likes clean water and detests toxins, The Mudpuppy also addresses the other hazard of plastic bottles: disposal. Plastic bottles are a major bulk contributor to landfill, where their PBA constituents can be absorbed into the land and water tables, exacerbating their threat. But the steel of a Mudpuppy, coming partially from recycled sources in the first place, lasts much longer and can then be entirely recycled. Increasingly, shops are recognising the value of The Mudpuppy and stocking it on their shelves, and it was recently featured in The Times. For those who can’t yet find it on the high street, the Mudpuppy is available online from http://www.onegreenbottle.com, priced from £7.49. One Green Bottle is also undertaking a nationwide campaign to supply schools and nurseries directly, visiting schools and nurseries in England until December 2008, and in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Europe next year.
