Foodies to Go Serves Chef-Made Meals on the Move

2010-09-08

September 08, 2010, Press Dispensary. Entertainment venues that wish they could offer their customers better fare than standard sandwiches and snacks are about be offered a wholly new culinary experience. Foodies to Go ( http://www.foodiestogo.co.uk ), an up-and-coming catering company based in London's Isle of Dogs, is launching a fresh concept in delicious, chef-cooked ‘meals on the move’ to be sold at theatres, festivals and outdoor events.

Foodies to Go's freshly cooked meals - such as shepherd’s pie, beef stew and chicken hot pot - come in specially-designed, spill-proof, waterproof boxes, complete with forks and napkins. The tasty food portions can be sold at any just about any venue, creating a new, high quality, added-value revenue stream for the proprietor without the need for major investment in kitchens or skilled kitchen staff. All that’s needed is a standard oven or convection microwave … or in London and at large gatherings, a Foodies to Go mobile kitchen will even deliver the meals piping hot to the venue’s door.

Although the Foodies to Go concept is loosely based on the idea of American noodle boxes seen on programmes such as NCIS, the idea of quality meals on the move is taken a step further with delicious dishes designed in-house by the Foodies to Go chef. Served in funky boxes showing whether the dish is vegetarian or contains meat, the meals can be enjoyed inside or outside while remaining warm and flavoursome. Even in the wettest, muddiest festival conditions they won't spill on to the customer's lap, taste dry or go quickly cold.

Foodies to Go had a successful early outing at Camp Bestival and the Action for Children cafe in Watford, as well as selling its ‘food to go’ at the live performance of The Railway Children at Eurostar Terminal, Waterloo.

Pete Phillips, a self-confessed “fanatical foodie” and proprietor of Foodies to Go, comments: “Foodies to Go is a new and tasty addition to the ‘food on the go’ market. The idea is to give punters something tasty in a box that’s made by a chef, rather than offering them the dreaded limp sandwich or pasty. Our food is cooked with passion and we have a true belief in using fine ingredients and upholding the highest quality standards.”

He adds: “Foodies to Go is a godsend for proprietors of venues such as theatre bars that traditionally may not have proper kitchens or even any cooking facilities at all, meaning they tend to offer only snacks such as crisps or nuts that don't prove especially satisfying to hungry customers. With our system, they can offer real meals, improving the customer experience and generating new revenues with little extra work for the staff.

“Really, the applications and benefits are endless. Busy professionals can take a Foodies to Go meal back to their desk and enjoy it while they browse that important business report. Customers can even eat their meal while strolling down the street or in the park. So far, feedback has been extremely positive.”

Foodies to Go is finding a receptive market for its food boxes, with more than 1,000 units being sold in just the first five weeks of business. Customers benefit from the design of the waterproof packaging: made from a single piece of cardboard sealed with food-safe, leak-proof plastic, it ensures that the food remains warm and is protected from drying out, even in an outdoor catering scenario. The box is recyclable and the green ethos is reflected in the provision of recycled napkins and wooden forks.

Foodies to Go will be attending the ‘Lunch!’ exhibition for food to go at Old Billingsgate Market, Lower Thames Street, London EC3R 6DX, from September 31 to October 1, 2010. Members of the press can contact to arrange attendance.
