Magic Silver Fabric Fights Hospital Super Bug

April 23, 2007 - Press Dispensary - Night clothes made of silver fabric which kills ‘superbug’ MRSA will be launched at the UK’s largest trade fair for home carers and disability healthcare professionals later this month. The pyjamas and nightgowns are the latest designs from Allana (www.allanasmyth.co.uk), a new company specialising in stylish clothing for disabled people who struggle getting dressed.

The UK has one of the highest levels of hospital infections in Europe and horror stories of 'superbug' victims frequently hit the headlines. Allana nightwear provides hospital patients with a proactive way to reduce their risk of MRSA with no side effects.

The pyjamas are a response to requests from people who don’t need specialised clothing but who want to help protect themselves when going into hospital. Nina Faresin, Allana’s design director says: "Silver is incorporated into the fibres of the fabric used in our nightwear. This provides permanent protection against infections as it doesn’t wash out. The clothing feels soft and cool to the touch as well as helping to prevent unpleasant odours.

“But the most important thing is style. Our customers enjoy wearing Allana designs which make them feel classy, independent and dignified."

Another issue is larger patients, weighing 30 stone or more. They are particularly likely to suffer indignity in hospital because, if the gowns provided don’t fit them, they have to remain naked in bed. “I think its really important that larger clothing is available,” says Sarah Smyth, director of Allana. “The last thing people want to have to worry about when they go into hospital is gowns, but it is the first thing that comes to mind for larger people."

As Britain’s population ages and the number of people with disabilities grows, the need for stylish, versatile and easy to use clothing increases. “My passion is to ensure that people, irrespective of their age or disability, have the right to wear stylish clothes made from sensuous, functional fabrics,” says Sarah, who has an extensive background in health and social care.

She adds: "We can’t wait to see the reaction to our clothing. As well as seeing the silver fabric, people will be able to try our new magnetic catches which make fastening and unfastening clothes so much easier for wearers and carers. As far as we know, no other British company uses them.”

These strips of magnets - an award-winning French invention - are used throughout the fashion range of smart separates. Customers can see how they work on Allana’s website (www.allanasmyth.co.uk) as well as on the Allana exhibition stand.

The clothing will be launched at Naidex 2007, April 24–26, at Birmingham NEC.
It is the UK’s largest exhibition and trade fair for health professionals in the disability market. More than 300 companies are exhibiting products and services.
