Archer Mathieson Unveils UK Recruitment and Retention Survey

November 26, 2007 - Press Dispensary - The latest research by Windsor-based executive recruitment and interim management company, Archer Mathieson ( http://www.archermat.com ) reveals that UK HR personnel and line managers advocate using specialist recruitment processes to source senior staff, backed up by structured and consistent induction programmes, and generous remuneration packages to retain loyalty. This is the fourth survey from the research series, focusing on recruitment and retention.

The survey found that 50% of human resourcing is managed internally, 10% outsourced and 40% presided over by individual line managers. While some line managers prefer the ‘DIY’ option, others recognise the complex nature of recruitment and query whether specialist support should be used to find candidates with the necessary skills and experience.

Meanwhile, amongst line managers and HR departments, respondents universally recognise the value of taking a “co-ordinated and consistent approach across the organisation” where recruitment is concerned, and implementing “a long term approach with forward planning.”

When it comes to the attraction and retention of key personnel, the most important requirements are seen as a competitive remuneration package 67% and supporting a career path through talent management and succession planning 64%. Behind the top two criteria but still considered important are the chance for employees to share in organisational success 33%, relevant training and development programmes 30%, and access to and involvement in organisational strategy 30%.

And, with a view to rewarding employees as well as rival companies do, it seems that organisations widely use internal, industry and role benchmarking to keep abreast of trends in their sector, with 67% adopting a combination of all three methods. In this ever competitive market, 30% of respondents describe their organisation’s overall rewards package as being in the upper quartile for their sector.

James Aston, head of the HR practice at Archer Mathieson, says: “Well structured and well managed HR functions, with an internal resourcing team, can reap rewards in employee retention and deliver the best results in recruitment. However direct contact with a specialist recruitment provider, such as Archer Mathieson, can make the difference in sourcing high level personnel who match an organisation’s exact needs from the start.”
