Submerge into the New Abstract

At Paintworks, Bristol from April 18-22, 2008

March 14, 2008 - Press Dispensary - Jimmy Galvin and Alison Black, two emerging talents in the abstract art world, exhibit together for the first time in a new show, Submerge, at Paintworks, Bristol’s Creative Quarter (http://www.paintworksbristol.co.uk), from April 18-22, 2008. Jimmy and Alison’s inspiration for the show comes from a mutual love of Marcel Duchamp, the king of Dada.

Compared to Rothko, but with the intensity of Francis Bacon, Jimmy Galvin has been doing a series of paintings based on the Large Glass, Duchamp’s seminal piece of work, for the show. Jimmy will also be producing some new large scale paintings using black as the main theme of motivation, and some three dimensional work inspired by Duchamp and Beuys.

Alison Black has progressed from graffiti based art to a move in the direction of pure abstraction, compared to De Kooning at his best; she has arrived at a distinctive abstract style that still has figurative connotations. Her paintings have become sought after, with Kate Moss known to be interested.

Jimmy Galvin comments: “We wanted to do something fresh, and at the same time monumental, with the conception of the new abstract - and show art that connects with people like hearing Hendrix or Stravinsky for the first time.”

Alison Black adds: “We believe that if art doesn’t make you hate or love or cry then it has failed. We are going to promote ourselves like a band, a conceptual piece of work ourselves, that produces art and takes you to that other place where everything is possible.”

Galvin continues: “For the last twenty years modern British art has been dominated by conceptual artists. From bricks to sharks to beds it has produced the art of ideas rather than the ideas of art.

He continues: “Recently, traditional forms have been making a comeback. Paintings have been seen in contemporary galleries. However, most of these paintings have been figurative with giant nudes, polyester paint-by-numbers and faux-naive strippers. New artists, have in general, shied away from the abstract.”
