How to Get Married Without Getting into Debt – courtesy of Youbuymywedding
May 06, 2008 - Press Dispensary - As the credit crunch continues, thoughts of summer nuptials this year could well be on the wane - if it weren’t for the ingenuity of Youbuymywedding.com (http://www.youbuymywedding.com) which helps happy couples to beat the banks by getting their guests to share the costs of the big day and avoid starting married life in debt.
With Gumtree.com claiming that more than one-third of engaged couples in the UK (35%) are having to scrimp in order to afford marriage costs, while ten per cent are putting off wedding plans altogether, sharing the costs could be the ideal way to beat the budget blues.
Youbuymywedding.com´s concept is to get the guests to pay for the wedding by making financial pledges online in advance of the big day. Every aspect of the wedding - from flowers and rings to reception drinks and even the dress - is included on a couple’s personalised wedding page, where guests can add a donation instead of buying yet another toaster.
As well as getting guests to cover the wedding costs, Youbuymywedding.com’s newly revamped website now includes a promotional scheme which gives the registered bride and groom access to substantial discounts from selected wedding suppliers.
Each time a guest makes a pledge, an SMS text alerts the couple, who can check their wedding fund balance at any time and make withdrawals – as a bank transfer or cheque – to pay for or book items in advance, such as the honeymoon or cake.
The cost of registration is only £49.95 per couple and an administration fee of a mere 4.75% is deducted from the total donations collected at the end, making the cost of the wedding significantly cheaper for the newly weds than if they had to foot the entire bill themselves.
Founder Liz Quant says: “Of the 250,000 weddings which take place in England & Wales each year, 41% of couples will use credit cards and 15% will take out a loan to cover the costs of their special day. In real terms this means that over half of all couples are likely to start married life in debt. Youbuymywedding.com believes that a wedding day should be a happy memory and not one that appears on a statement for months or years to come as an ongoing debt.”
