NO2ID Voter Education Tour, Day 1: Norwich, Seat of UK Home Secretary Charles Clarke
2005-02-18
February 18, 2005 - Press Dispensary - Starting Saturday 19th February, NO2ID embarks on a tour of England, visiting the vulnerable constituencies of dozens of high profile, ID card-supporting MPs. First stop: Norwich, constituency of Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary.
In a day of voter education, NO2ID – the umbrella group campaigning against ID cards and the national identity register - will assemble at 12 midday outside Norwich City Hall, St. Peter's Street, and give out thousands of flyers and stickers to the people of Norwich, whose Council has passed a motion pledging to reject and refuse to cooperate with an ID card scheme.
Later, in Norwich South, NO2ID will be joined by Prospective Parliamentary Candidates from Liberal Democrat, Green and UKIP parties, and Cllr Steve Radford, president of Liverpool Council Liberal Party, who ensured Liverpool Council passed a similar motion condemning ID cards.
Phil Booth, national coordinator for NO2ID said:
'After our Voter Education Tour hits Norwich, even more people are going to wake up to the realities of having an ID card scheme in Britain. We will press home the point that the MP for Norwich South is responsible for taking away their liberties, infringing their privacy, and costing them personally hundreds of pounds and the taxpayer billions.'
'NO2ID said that MPs supporting this illiberal, ineffective and unpopular Bill would be punished electorally - and so they will.'
After Norwich, NO2ID will continue around the country, including such high points Michael Howard's Folkstone and Hythe constituency, and other marginal seats where the sitting MP, regardless of party, supports ID cards.
