Do You Know If Someone Is Who They Say They Are?

November 13, 2006 - Press Dispensary - The rise in migrant workers, notably from eastern Europe, offers new opportunities for UK employers but also a new worry: verifying the identity and background of a potential employee. But help is now at hand with today’s launch of a new service from Kent based private investigation firm Alpha Vestigare.

Irrespective of where they come from, an alarmingly high number of people lie on their CVs*, so pre-employment screening has always been advisable. But when potential employees have travelled half a continent and crossed several national borders, screening becomes a vital part of the recruitment process and can provide appreciable financial savings.

The ‘International Pre-employment Screening and Background Checks’ service developed by Alpha Vestigare Ltd, of Tunbridge Wells, will verify a potential employee’s full name, date of birth, address, qualifications, and current and previous employment. If required, it is can also verify outstanding County Court judgements, bankruptcy, marital status, criminal record (in eastern Europe only), company directorships and previous business history.

Timothy Burchell, Director of Alpha Vestigare, comments: “It is all too easy for companies – entirely unwittingly – to take on dishonest employees and even known thieves. These risks can be dramatically reduced by carrying out pre-employment checks in addition to taking up references.”

Although the service is new, the potential benefits to employers are already proven. Burchell continues: “Before launching our ‘International Pre-employment Screening and Background Checks’ service we ran a three-month trial and successfully conducted over 800 eastern European screenings for UK businesses. Our findings achieved potential savings for our clients of over £1 million.”

* A survey of 1,500 UK employers found that 71% had encountered lies on CVs and 49% said it was a serious problem when recruiting staff (The Guardian, 15 March 2004).
