Press Dispensary - February 11, 2008 - With environmental issues high on the agenda, food packaging specialist Paragon Flexibles (http://www.paragonprintandpackaging.com ) has launched an intelligent flexible film lid - the i-lid™ – which will reduce the amount of packaging needed to seal products like fresh fruit salads, making them longer lasting and less likely to be binned, using food and film science developed at the Paragon Flexibles technology centre.
An estimated 6.7 million tonnes of household food waste is produced each year in the UK, about half of which could have been eaten. Most of this waste ends up in landfill sites and is a major contributor to the production of greenhouse gases. The i-lid uses intelligent film technology to reduce manufacturing waste and packaging weight, maintaining food quality for longer, in store and at home.
Paragon is the preferred packaging supplier to many UK supermarkets including Sainsbury, Asda, CO-OP, M&S and Tesco. The i-lid’s improved product performance will help food producers and food retailers meet Courtauld Commitment targets for landfill reduction by reducing food and packaging waste.
Mark Lapping, MD of Paragon Flexibles, says: “Environmentally conscious customers may be wary of plastic packaging, but the new i-lid film proves that packaging technology can play its part in saving the environment rather than damaging it.”
The i-lid can be produced as a printed or transparent film, and can be coated with specific barrier properties or perforated to deliver optimum pack conditions for a variety of food products.
