Rediscovery Books Polishes Up Forgotten Literary Gems

Press Dispensary - November 01, 2006 - Sussex-based Rediscovery Books (http://www.rediscoverybooks.com) is publishing high quality reproductions of rare books from the library of the Royal Geographical Society. The joint project will breathe new life into spectacular accounts of the expeditions and campaigns that forged the British Empire.

Rediscovery Books is using a combination of publishing and technical expertise to preserve ageing volumes whose precious contents would otherwise have been lost to the general public – digitally scanning the books and publishing them in attractive paperback and hardback facsimile copies.

Peter Repp, director of Rediscovery Books, says: “Great libraries are treasure houses packed with forgotten gems. As a specialist publisher, we make it our business to find these jewels and polish them so they sparkle once again.”

This is the first series of titles to be published by Rediscovery Books, which was established in 2004 as a joint venture between military bookseller, Naval & Military Press, and service bureau, Datapro Data Preparation.

Rediscovery Books enjoys a special relationship with the Royal Geographical Society, which was founded as one of the great institutions of Victorian Britain. It was the driving force behind titanic explorers such as Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Speke and Baker, and the expeditions that opened up equatorial Africa, the Middle East, India, Afghanistan and the Polar regions.

The books in its archives are consequently packed with epic tales of exploration, discovery, adventure and danger from the undiscovered ends of the earth.

“They illustrate strikingly the stoical mindset and fortitude with which our Victorian forebears – women as well as men – faced hazards and conditions which we would find intolerable,” says Mr Repp. “As well as offering dramatic accounts of the explorers’ escapades, the books frequently contain vivid and charming observations of the people, the flora and fauna, and the terrain of regions still unspoiled by technology, and unvisited by tourists.”

“These are all books that take the reader on perilous and thrilling journeys from the heroic ages of discovery,” said Mr Repp. “They are tales that no adventurous spirit will want to miss, and give an interesting perspective on the way in which the attitudes of people in some of the world’s most turbulent areas have been formed.”

The unabridged facsimiles can be bought from bookshops or directly from the firm’s website at http://www.rediscoverybooks.com, where full details of each title are listed.
